SOLUTION
Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR)
Over a half of century, AGV has been widely used to transport materials around on behalf of humans. It has become a familiar fixture in factories, warehouses, and anywhere there’s a need for repetitive material delivery. However, until recently, AGV is challenged by the more sophisticated technology known as AMR, Autonomous Mobile Robot. AMR is a robot that uses on-board sensors and processors to transport materials with- out any markers or physical tracks.
ABOUT AUTONOMOUS MOBILE ROBOT (AMR)
ADVANTAGES OF
AUTONOMOUS MOBILE ROBOT (AMR)
- INTELLIGENT NAVIGATION
- HIGH OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY & SCALABILITY
- COST EFFECTIVE
INTELLIGENT NAVIGATION
AGV features minimal onboard intelligence. It can only move around the facility by following the fixed paths that has been programmed into it. To navigate AGV, it needs to be guided by magnetic strips, wires or sensors. AGV can detect obstacles but it is not able to maneuver around them. It will just stop on its paths until the obstacle is removed. In contrast, AMR is much smarter than AGV. It does not require any tracks for navigation. It navigates dynamically using map which allows it to generate the optimal path from one destination to another. In addition, it is not only able to detect obstacles like what AGV does, it is also able to maneuver around them. This would always help to ensure the material flow is on schedule.
HIGH OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY & SCALABILITY
AGV is limited to follow strict routes which are integrated into the facility. This means AGV will only perform the repetitive task throughout its service life. Changing the routes of AGV will be simply difficult and not cost-effective due to infrastructural changes. However, AMR is much flexible since its routes is not limited by physical guides like wires and magnetic strips. It can be easily remapped if they are required to perform a variety of different tasks at different places. It will automatically make adjustments in order to meet the changing environment. Additionally, AMR is highly flexible for agile businesses. For instance, if there is modification on the production line such as expansion of facility or changing of facility layout, AMR can be deployed quickly and easily.
COST EFFECTIVE
As compared to AGV, an AMR consists more complex and advanced software where people might think that it will be simply expensive. But, when we factor in the installation and commissioning cost of AGV, AMR is actually much cost-effective in which there is no physical guides like wires, magnetic strips or any modification to the building is required for installation. Since no modification to the existing infrastructure, it will not create addi- tional cost by disrupting the on-going production process.
